BREAKFAST ROUND-UP: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AAP RTV FILE AT 0430
MORCOMBE (SYDNEY)
Queensland police will search an area of bushland on the Sunshine coast after charging
a 41-year-old man with the murder of missing teenager DANIEL MORCOMBE.
The man was arrested and charged last night, nearly eight years after DANIEL went missing
while waiting for bus in the Woombye district.
He's been charged with murder, deprivation of liberty, child stealing, indecent treatment
of a child and interfering with a corpse and remains in police custody to appear in Brisbane
Magistrates Court tomorrow.
DANIEL's parents say they're finding it tough coming to terms with the idea their son
has been murdered.
BRUCE MORCOMBE has told Seven News the arrest comes after years of relentless searching
and he remains hopeful DANIEL's body will be found.
Meanwhile, in New South Wales, police have asked the public for help after two apparent
attempts to abduct children yesterday.
Police say in the first incident, a man grabbed an eight-year-old girl in a park near
Penrith in Sydney's west while her mother was nearby, before she could break free, and
in the second, at Wyoming on the Central Coast, a 13-year-old boy was chased by a man
who got out of an older model red Ford Falcon sedan.
BOMB (SYDNEY)
In a new development in the MADDIE PULVER bomb hoax case, police have seized a computer
believed to be connected to the note left with the Mosman teenager.
The Sun-Herald newspaper reports police attached to Strike Force Haddon seized the
computer from Kincumber Library on the New South Wales Central Coast last week.
The PULVER family owns a holiday house in Avoca, a 10-minute drive from the library.
GILLARD US (PERTH)
JULIA GILLARD says Australia wants to see the United States economy regain its momentum
and supports the continuing US presence in Asia as a cornerstone of regional stability.
Addressing the gala dinner of the annual Australian-American Leadership Dialogue in
Perth last night, the Prime Minister said Australia and the US have worked together in
the G20 group of nations to bring the global economy back from the brink during the Global
Financial Crisis.
But she says the events of recent weeks show the work is not yet done.
Ms GILLARD's audience included World Bank President ROBERT ZOELLICK and the US Assistant
Secretary of State for the Asia-Pacific, KURT CAMPBELL.
LIBS WA WRAP (PERTH)
Federal Opposition leader TONY ABBOTT has used his speech at West Australian state
Liberal conference to continue his attack on the carbon and mining tax.
Addressing the conference yesterday, Mr ABBOTT accused the Labor government of deliberately
attacking Western Australia with the two taxes, which he says will damage the state's
prosperity.
Mr ABBOTT says the federal government's pursuit of these two taxes demonstrates it's
out of touch with the country's most dynamic state.
Meanwhile, Federal Liberal Party president ALAN STOCKDALE says his party needs more
funds and donations to be ready for any snap election.
And, a push to end welcome-to-country ceremonies has been voted down at the conference,
with Aboriginal MP KEN WYATT saying it goes against the party's values.
CSG NEWMAN (BRISBANE)
The Liberal National Party has promised to provide Queensland farmers the protection
they need against the burgeoning coal seam gas industry.
Party's leader CAMPBELL NEWMAN has promised to fix what he sees as an imbalance between
farmers' and miners' rights.
Mr CAMPBELL'S statement came a day after Opposition Leader TONY ABBOTT won praise from
Greens leader BOB BROWN for backing farmers' rights to deny miners access to their land.
FREEBODY (CAIRNS)
Queensland's Liberal National Party has suspended the membership of one of its candidates
for the upcoming state election over a highly inflammatory email about Prime Minister
JULIA GILLARD.
LNP State Director MICHAEL O'DWYER says PAUL FREEBODY, the candidate for the state
electorate of Cairns, has had his membership suspended pending an investigation into a
range of matters concerning his recent conduct.
Mr FREEBODY stood aside from his candidacy following accusations he wrote in an email
that he hoped JULIA GILLARD follows the history of assassinated US President JOHN F KENNEDY.
However, Mr FREEBODY claims the email was doctored.
US VOTE PERRY (CHARLESTON)
Conservative Texas Governor RICK PERRY has declared he's running for president, becoming
the latest Republican candidate to mount a 2012 White House challenge.
PERRY says with faith in God, the support of his family and an unwavering belief in
the goodness of America, he wants to be president of the United States.
PERRY is a three-term governor, and considered among the Republican frontrunners, alongside
former Massachusetts Governor MITT ROMNEY and US congresswoman MICHELE BACHMANN of Minnesota.

Motorists have been asked to avoid central Sydney and eastern beachside suburbs while
road closures are in place.
All roads are expected to reopen by 4pm (AEST)

NSW: RailCorp rotten to the core: corruption watchdog
By Belinda Cranston
SYDNEY, Dec 15 AAP - The NSW government will request criminal charges be laid against
former RailCorp employees following a damning report by the state's corruption watchdog.
The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) found "an extraordinary extent
of public-sector corruption" within RailCorp.
"Corrupt employees appeared to be confident that they would not be caught or if they
were that not much would happen to them," ICAC Commissioner Jerrold Cripps QC said.
The report, Mr Cripps' eighth and final one on bribery and fraud at RailCorp, makes
40 recommendations to address widespread corruption and calls for major reforms.
The investigation found contracts worth almost $19 million were improperly awarded
to companies owned by RailCorp employees, their families and/or friends in return for
more than $2.5 million in corrupt payments.
NSW Transport Minister David Campbell said he would work with RailCorp chief executive
Rob Mason to implement all the recommendations.
"This is an opportunity for the government to say that corruption in the public sector,
whether in RailCorp or anywhere else, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated," he said.
The ICAC investigation made a total of 96 corrupt conduct findings against 31 people,
and Mr Cripps believes a further 33 people should be prosecuted for 663 offences.
Mr Campbell said he would write to the NSW Director of Public Prosecution to request
criminal charges be laid against those people ICAC had identified as corrupt.
He said RailCorp had already acted on about 120 of 130 recommendations made in previous
reports and would call on NSW's auditor general to help implement some reforms.
"RailCorp has commenced some changes to its purchasing and procurement processes," he said.
"I'll be asking the auditor general to give further advice on that."
He said improved training, new procedures and continous auditing would ensure RailCorp
would not "go back to what is being uncovered by ICAC".
A shake-up of RailCorp was underway "as a consequence of the government's decision
to reduce senior executive service by 20 per cent," Mr Campbell said.
He said the ICAC report would be used as part of that process.
Premier Nathan Rees said he expected all the recommendations would be followed.
"I think Commissioner Cripps is on to something that a lot of people already suspected,"
Mr Rees told reporters.
"If Mr Cripps has recommendations, then I'm all ears. The rot has to stop."
Opposition transport spokeswoman Gladys Berejiklian said the Labor government had failed
to act on previous recommendations handed down by ICAC.
"Clearly they have the stomach for this type of activity because they've swept it under
the carpet and they have failed to act and the taxpayers and commuters of NSW are the
ones paying for it," she said.
In October, Mr Rees announced RailCorp would be abolished and rail services would be
brought back under direct government control.
The RailCorp name would be retained, he said, and the RailCorp board would have an advisory role.

Oly: Hackett's ex-coach drives Zhang to medal glory
By Martin Parry
BEIJING, Aug 10 AFP - China's rising swim star Zhang Lin, who stormed to the Olympic
400m freestyle silver medal today, owes a huge debt to Grant Hackett's former coach Denis
Cotterell.
The Australian, who steered Hackett to two Olympic gold medals, was invited by China
to help their swimmers ahead of the Beijing Games and his experience paid off handsomely.
Not only did Zhang come second to South Korean sensation Park Hae-Twan but he beat
Hackett into the bargain, with the legendary Australian touching in sixth.
"He (Cotterell) is very experienced. We've formed the team in less than six months
and we've beaten the top swimmers in the world. I couldn't have imagined it," said an
elated Zhang.
The 20-year-old is the first Chinese swimmer allowed to train outside of China and
his breakthrough here is no real surprise after the times he set in a three-month training
stint in Australia this year.
Before Sunday's race, Cotterell was full of praise for his young charge.
"This guy is improving and I'm just hoping I do a good enough job to not have a billion
Chinese gets their hopes up and have them dashed," he told reporters.
The idea of sending Zhang to train with Cotterell was first raised four years ago when
China's head coach Zhang Yadong met with the Australian at the Athens Olympics.
At last year's world championships in Melbourne they met again and Zhang Yadong asked
if Zhang Lin could go Down Under to train, which he first did at the end of last year.
Cotterell said he had no other plans to coach Chinese swimmers, but stressed that if
China were interested then they would have to go to Australia because he did not have
time to base himself in China.
"That's up to them, but I will work with them for sure (if they ask)," he said.
"They are good people and they have the potential to get better.
"But I have my own squad at home, I cannot move. My club in Australia is important to me."
Since its prime at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when China won four golds, the squad
has had to fight the stigma of doping scandals and has managed just two golds in the following
three Games -- one in 1996 and one in 2004.
Other than Zhang, they have few other clear-cut medal contenders.
Their best hopes lie with Wu Peng in the men's 200m butterfly and Zhou Yafei in the
women's 100m butterfly.
Fourteen-year-old schoolgirl Li Xuanxu, who finished last in the 400m individual medley
final Sunday, is considered a good prospect for future Games.

Fed: ACCC inquiry into grocery prices starts today
SYDNEY, April 1 AAP - A public inquiry into whether shoppers are being price-gouged
at the checkout begins in Sydney today.
The inquiry by the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) will review
all aspects of the supply chain in the grocery industry, including the nature of competition
at the supply, wholesale and retail levels.
It will assess whether consumers are getting a fair deal, the ACCC says.
In their public submission to the inquiry, researchers working at the World Health
Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention have called for the inquiry
to look specifically at the prices of healthy foods.
"We submit that as part of this inquiry the ACCC should consider not only food prices
in general, but should also look specifically at the prices of healthy foods and the implications
of the relatively high cost of healthy foods for low income consumers," the researchers
from Deakin University say in their submission, published online.
"While obesity levels are increasing in the whole Australian population the prevalence
of obesity is disproportionately high in socio-economically disadvantaged populations.
"The high cost of food and the poor availability of healthy foods are some of the factors
that explain this higher prevalence of obesity in low-income populations."

Qld: Pump water plan is "common sense" - Howard
The Prime Minister says a federal plan to transfer water from northern NSW to Queensland's
drought-stricken south-east .. is a commonsense approach to the crisis.
Federal Water Resources Minister MALCOLM TURNBULL released a report last week which
concluded a cross-border pipeline would be a cost-effective option.
JOHN HOWARD's told Southern Cross Broadcasting .. the plan passes the commonsense pub
test .. and deserves debate.
The report .. prepared by the Snowy Mountains Energy Corporation for the National Water
Commission .. outlines five options for transporting up to 100 thousand megalitres of
water each year across the border.
Four of the options include damming NSW's Clarence River and piping it to the Logan
River in Queensland .. while the fifth involves damming the Tweed River to pump water
to the Nerang River.
Both the Queensland and NSW state premiers have dismissed the plan.

NSW: Firefighters readying themselves for afternoon wind change
SYDNEY, Dec 14 AAP - Firefighters battling a bushfire in rugged country near Tumut,
in southern NSW, are preparing for a wind change that could force the fire over control
lines.
Authorities say the fire is burning out of control in the Bondo pine plantation, 30km
north-east of Tumut.
The fire has burnt out about 13,000ha of pine plantation in the Bondo, Billapaloola
and Buccleuch State Forests.
The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has advised people in Argalong and the Upper Goobragandra
River Valley to prepare today for ember attacks and flames.
More than 300 firefighters, along with 12 water bombing aircraft, will work on the
fire over the next 24 hours, the RFS says.
RFS spokesman Cameron Wade said the Bureau of Meteorology had forecast stronger winds
around 2pm (AEDT) today which may push the fire across containment lines.
Firefighters had been readying themselves for the worsening wind conditions, and extra
resources had been rushed to the area, he said.
They were now "waiting to see what happened", Mr Wade added.
A total fire ban is in place for much of NSW today.
The Rural Fire Service has issued a total fire ban for the greater Sydney region, Illawarra
and Shoalhaven, the far south coast, Monaro Alpine and the Southern Ranges.
The ban is also in place for the lower central west plains, southern slopes, eastern,
southern and northern riverina as well as the south-western and far western regions of
the state.
Meanwhile, a hot day is forecast for the greater Sydney region, with temperatures expected
to peak at 37 degrees celsius in the western suburbs and a high of 30 forecast for the
CBD.
Temperatures in other NSW cities and towns, including Wagga Wagga, Bathurst, Newcastle
and Bega should also reach the low 30s, while a top of 38 degrees is predicted for Dubbo.

WA: Sydney woman jailed for nine years for smuggling heroin
PERTH, Aug 7 AAP - A Sydney woman has been sentenced to nine years jail for smuggling
almost 2kg of heroin into Australia from Vietnam.
Thi Thanh Nga Ho, 37, was caught with the heroin at Perth's international airport in
February, after she flew in via Singapore along with her three-year-old son and 18-month-old
daughter.
Ho later pleaded guilty to trying to smuggle 1.9kg of heroin into Australia.
In the West Australian Supreme Court today, Justice John McKechnie sentenced Ho to
nine years jail, saying she would suffer from not being with her young children as a consequence
of her imprisonment.
"Your children will be deprived of their mother for many years and will undoubtedly
suffer because of it," Justice McKechnie said.
However, "many hundreds of parents could have felt the misery of disconnection from
their children" if the heroin she smuggled had reached the streets, he said.
Ho will be eligible for parole in February 2011.

at around 8pm (AEST) yesterday.
But he fled empty handed from both in a grey or silver Holden Rodeo ute, a police spokeswoman
said.
His arm was grazed when an anti-robbery shield clamped down on it after he demanded
money at the bank, but no one else was injured during the incidents, she said.
The man, who is described as being of medium build with dark hair, was carrying a pink
umbrella and wearing black clothing, including a balaclava and gloves.

Fed: Labor asks China not to give Zimbabwe "soft" financial help
Labor is urging China not to give Zimbabwe any soft financial assistance, which could
directly benefit the MUGABE regime.
Zimbabwe President ROBERT MUGABE is in China on a week-long visit, trying to secure
financial aid and investment in his country's ailing economy.
But Opposition foreign affairs spokesman KEVIN RUDD says any financial help from China
could compromise its international standing.
Mr RUDD's told ABC Radio he'd be deeply concerned if China gets into the business of
financially propping up MUGABE's regime.
The United Nations has condemned Zimbabwe's so-called urban cleanup drive which involves
demolishing shanty towns where thousands of Zimbabweans live.

Costello: No objection to Xstrata bid for WMC =3 Melbourne
Other conditions require Xstrata to undertake consultation with the Department of Industry
Tourism and Resources on the terms of any third party marketing arrangements in respect
of uranium.
The treasurer said he welcomed Xstrata chief executive Mick Davis' assurance regarding
Xstrata's commitment to the standards of corporate governance and disclosure associated
with the London Stock Exchange and its plans to appoint an Australian resident to the
Xstrata board.
Xstrata's $8.4 billion takeover bid for Australia's WMC Resources Ltd is a hostile
offer, of $7.20 a share, and required approval from Mr Costello on the advice of the Foreign
Investments Review Board (FIRB).
Political and business groups have lobbied against the bid on the grounds it would
give Xstrata control over WMC's vast uranium deposits at its Olympic Dam mine in South
Australia.
Western Australia's Premier Geoff Gallop business has also opposed the takeover offer,
saying the Swiss group had show it was not a good corporate citizen after it abandoned
its vanadium mine in the state.
Xstrata confirmed its interest in WMC in October last year when it said it intended
to offer WMC shareholders $6.35 a share for their stock.
The bid was increased to $7.20 on February 2.
The WMC board has urged shareholders not to accept the offer.
Xstrata has said it would update shareholders on February 18, on whether it intended
to extend the bid.

Voice Internet Access Available to Wireless Carriers Nationwide for First Time.
Business Editors/High Tech Writers
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 31, 2000
GTE TSI and Voice Access Technologies Announce Nine-City Rollout of
Voice-Activated Traffic and Mobile Yellow Pages
GTE Telecommunications Services Inc. (GTE TSI, a division of GTE), (NYSE: GTE) and Voice Access Technologies of San Jose Wednesday announced a nine-city launch of location-specific, voice Internet access for wireless carriers, starting in San Francisco and continuing through the summer to eight additional major U.S. wireless markets: Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta and Los Angeles.
Voice-activated live traffic reports and "mobile yellow pages" are the first services being made available to wireless carriers. The services will allow wireless subscribers to verbally request traffic for a specific location, or ask for a business listing nearby, and listen to an audio response culled from the Web.
"Our significant investment in this coast-to-coast product launch speaks to our belief that combining voice and location-finding technologies is the next wireless jackpot," said Terry Lewis, president-GTE TSI of Tampa Bay, Fla.
"How many times have you been stuck in a traffic jam that could have been avoided with a warning just a few minutes sooner? Any commuter will tell you that radio traffic reports are simply unreliable in major metropolitan areas," Lewis said. "That's why we believe that we have the 'killer app' for wireless operators to offer their subscribers -- up-to-the-minute traffic reports available at the command of your voice."
According to William D. Brockmeyer II, president and chief executive officer of Voice Access Technologies, "This technology launch makes it possible for the 86-million wireless subscribers in the U.S. to receive voice-based Internet access from their carriers for the first time. Because our system works on any current or future cell phones, we believe that carriers will become the dominant providers of these services to wireless users."
The voice Internet access services are designed to be simple, easy and safe to use, especially while driving, replacing the need for button-pushing or text-based messages to retrieve information.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, traffic content is supplied by the California Highway Patrol and other government agencies. It is updated every one-to-four minutes offering far more reliable, timely and location-specific information than the routine radio reports normally available to commuters.
Mark Plakias, director, voice and wireless commerce at The Kelsey Group, said, "All of our research indicates that accurate traffic updates are the clear No. 1 priority application for wireless customers -- this is information a significant number of wireless users will pay for. The combination of Voice Access Technologies' unique approach, and GTE TSI's strength in information services distribution suggest this will be the first major deployment of voice portal services for the wireless industry."
The mobile yellow pages feature will provide the nearest requested retail establishment based on the subscriber's location. This information will be updated daily and will be derived from the Internet as well as other sources.
The voice Internet access technology are features of GTE TSI's INPosition location-based service, utilizing wireless E911 location-finding technology and content from Voice Access and other partners. The GTE TSI -- Voice Access product uses speech recognition, a technology that actually understands and digitizes human speech. This technology is considered to be more sensitive than voice recognition, which must be trained to respond to a particular voice.
Unlike other voice Internet access services available, the length and content of INPosition traffic reports are unrelated to any advertising contracts. Wireless operators do have the option to brand the service and feature local traffic slang or appropriate regional accents.

Crying out for change.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
The rights group run by Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi issued a stark warning yesterday to the Iranian authorities about what it called growing public despair over human rights and economic pressures. In its quarterly report the Defenders of Human Rights Centre warned the government about the "perilous consequences of a prevalence of public despair"."The bad economic situation with inflation running at 25 per cent, a growing number of unemployed and an ignorance of economic infrastructure" were all areas of concern raised by the group. The centre has complained about hundreds of cases of trials and punitive verdicts handed down against activist students, teachers, labourers and women."The group wishes that the country's rulers... take action to prevent violent reactions from unsatisfied people who have become frustrated that their civil and peaceful efforts" have not borne fruit, the report said.
It lamented "the political system's lack of will to change discriminatory laws against women and a lack of tolerance in hearing cries for change".Iran has stepped up arrests of rights advocates and unionists over the past year.Several female activists
have been jailed for their involvement in the 'One-Million-Signature' campaign seeking equal rights for women in inheritance, divorce and child custody."Imprisonment, flogging and torment are still used against the followers of a movement seeking change for equality through calm and logical protest," it said. The group also touched upon the status of minors in Iranian prisons, which has sparked strong objections from international rights groups."At least 74 minors who committed capital crimes before reaching the age 18 are awaiting the gallows," the rights advocates said.In such cases in Iran minors are executed after they become 18, but there have been reports of some people being hanged when younger than that age."This centre urges the authorities to take reasonable action, not just meaningless propaganda, to cure the chronic disease of human rights violations and to improve the livelihood of the people," it said. The group, a frequent critic of the government over its treatment of dissidents and rights activists, was formed by five prominent rights lawyers and is headed by Ebadi, who won the Nobel peace in 2003.

Arizona Man Sentenced to 180 Months in Prison for Engaging in a Child Exploitation Enterprise.
M2 PRESSWIRE-May 13, 2011-: Arizona Man Sentenced to 180 Months in Prison for Engaging in a Child Exploitation Enterprise(C)1994-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
RDATE:12052011
WASHINGTON -- David Dean, 43, of Peoria, Ariz., was sentenced today to 180 months in prison and a lifetime of supervised release for engaging in a child exploitation enterprise, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton for the Western District of Pennsylvania and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton.
"The members of this criminal enterprise committed the most unthinkable of crimes -- they trafficked in chilling images of children and infants being brutally, sexually abused. And, they used a social networking website to distribute these images so that they could reach as many other like-minded individuals as they could," said Assistant Attorney General Breuer. "Our children, who are the most vulnerable and innocent in our society, deserve every measure of protection we can give them. As this prosecution shows, we will use every tool we have to attack and dismantle these illegal child exploitation networks."
"This prosecution also illustrates the ripe environment for child predators that exists though the internet. The defendants in this case found kinship online, validating their shared desire to engage in sex with children, and to seek sexual gratification through sharing horrific and degrading images of children," said U.S. Attorney Hickton. "We must respond to this threat with the full force of federal law enforcement and its many partners across agencies, jurisdictions, state lines, and national borders. I am committed to this effort, and we will not stop until we eradicate this evil."
"Possession of child pornography is not a victimless crime," said ICE Director Morton. "Those who engage in this criminal behavior should be forewarned that ICE, along with our law enforcement partners, will use every tool at our disposal to end the sexual exploitation of our children and keep them safe wherever they live."
On June 17, 2010, Dean pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Arthur A. Schwab in Pittsburgh to one count of engaging in a child exploitation enterprise. According to court documents and proceedings, Dean and others distributed images and videos of children being sexually abused to other members of an international group that had restricted membership and was formed on a social networking website. Members of the group distributed to one another thousands of sexually explicit images and videos of children, many of which graphically depicted prepubescent, male children, including some infants, being sexually abused and sometimes sodomized or subjected to bondage.
Seven co-defendants have previously pleaded guilty and been sentenced to prison as a result of this investigation.
This case was investigated by ICE's Homeland Security Investigations and the High Technology Investigative Unit of the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS). Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig W. Haller and CEOS Trial Attorney Andrew McCormack prosecuted the case.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys' Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as to identify and rescue victims. SRI LANKA RURAL SECTOR EYED BY GLOBAL BPO SERVICE PROVIDERS.
COLOMBO, Oct 5 Asia Pulse - Sri Lanka's rural economy can take a slice of India's 12 billion dollar Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry by catering to the bottom of the pyramid customers who look at costs over optimum service, a foreign investor said.
"India does about US$12 billion of knowledge base process work; 10 per cent of that is a big amount for us," Raj Amirthanayagam, managing director of Revanalytics Solutions Inc., a Canadian technology company, said.
"They can make 2,000 rupees (US$17.42) an hour; that's what's paid in other countries for quality processed work."
India is one of the largest BPO operators in the world, but the boom in the Indian economy has increased operating costs in cities due to higher rent expenses. The ICT penetration rate in rural India remains poor.
Now Indian BPOs are looking at specialized back office services such as accounts, legal, insurance and technology-related work, which generates higher income.
Sri Lanka has great potential in the BPO sector as the government has invested substantially setting up 'Nenasela' information technology training centre's, Amirthanayagam said.
"There is a big demand for jobs in the lower end of the ICT industry."
Sri Lankan-born Amirthanayagam said opportunities are available for the lower end of the BPO industry such as data entry which has got too expensive to operate in cities.
BPO companies operate from cities due to infrastructure bottlenecks in the rural provinces such as lack of high speed internet lines.
But in rural Sri Lanka IT access has improved after the government opened 'Naneselas' ICT kiosks that provide high-speed internet links.
"This is ideal for graduates who don't want to leave their homes," Amirthanayagam said.
Sri Lankan students are very talented and if trained and developed can provide BPO services with more value addition, said Sankar Krishnan, managing director of US-based outsourcing company Adventity, another firm keen to do BPO work in the island.
"We will be teaching skills which will be done better in the rural sector," Krishnan said. "We will train them to use the systems."

PR Strategist and Author Richard Laermer is the Featured Guest on This Week's Edition of Newsroom Confidential.
LOS ANGELES, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- This is a great time to be a great news source, PR strategist Richard Laermer explains on this week's edition of Newsroom Confidential, the weekly radio broadcast that provides listeners an insider's guide to journalism and public relations.
Laermer, author of Full Frontal PR and CEO of RLM Public Relations, observes that journalists now more than ever need quality news sources who will help the journalists cope with the increasing demands being placed on them.
"Nobody [in news] has any time or patience and everyone is overwhelmed," Laermer says. That kind of newsroom stress is actually good for news sources who do their homework, correctly identify ways to assist the media, and then contact the correct reporter or producer with useful and newsworthy story tips and ideas.
The full interview with Laermer, who himself is a former magazine and newspaper journalist, can be heard on Newsroom Confidential's digital rebroadcast, available now at http://www.newsroomconfidential.com/.
Also on this week's edition of Newsroom Confidential, host and executive producer Dean Rotbart interviews Gay Bryant, editor-in-chief of the new Success magazine, now on newsstands.
Bryant tells Rotbart that Success aims to help those individuals who've already achieved business success but need help outside the work world. "Their #1 issue is how to have a life as well as how to have a business," Brant explains. Topics in the magazine include building good relationships with family, community and religion.
Bryant, herself, is an example of the happy blend between career and family, Rotbart notes. "Gay came to this country with absolutely nothing and has become a magazine industry success as well as a great mother and wife," Rotbart says. "She should feature herself in her publication."
Newsroom Confidential airs live each Sunday night on NewsTalk 870 KRLA in Los Angeles and is simulcast around the world on the Internet. The program can also be heard throughout the week at the Newsroom Confidential web site.
Rotbart, host of the program, is a Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist and founding editor of NewsBios.com, which provides in-depth dossiers on more than 6,000 influential journalists.

Chandler and Curry still the focus of the Bulls.
Byline: K.C. Johnson
CHICAGO _ The television cameras and tape recorders were aimed at the Bulls' draft picks during Friday's news conference at the Berto Center.
But the focus of this Bulls team stood watching the proceedings from the back of the gym. That focus is still Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry.
"No matter what we did (in the draft), they're the most important thing going forward," general manager John Paxson said. "We need them to make a big step. It's Year 4. They're still young, but they have been in the league long enough to know what it takes."
Paxson complimented Chandler's commitment thus far this off-season, calling him "steady, reliable and focused." But in comments made to WMVP-AM 1000, the Bulls' flagship station, trainer Tim Grover called Curry's off-season commitment "average."
If this work ethic doesn't improve, Paxson might be forced to gauge Curry's trade value.
"I know a large part of what's going to happen depends on me and Tyson," Curry said. "That's why they keep drafting guards. They could have taken a big man. But they still have confidence in (us)."
Chandler, who recently became engaged, survived his own battle with trade rumors. He wasn't offended.
"Me and Eddy have been here three years and we haven't made the playoffs yet," Chandler said. "It's a business. When you don't perform as well as you're supposed to, you're going to be mentioned.
"I'm happy I'm here. This is my home. I would hate to go before making the playoffs here. I came here with that purpose."
Depth chart
If the Bulls sign all three draft picks, they will have 14 players under contract, although Jannero Pargo and Linton Johnson are signed only through the summer and might not return. Counting the draft picks, the current breakdown is five guards, five small forwards, three power forwards and one center.
Paxson and his staff had a meeting about free agency Friday and don't be surprised if you hear Toni Kukoc came up.
"We still need to try to get another wing and a bigger guard for backup roles," Paxson said. "You also always look for a big guy who can help you."
The above roster also assumes that Jamal Crawford will be back. Management assures that he will be, but that could change if he gets a big offer as a restricted free agent. New York could offer a six-year deal worth $37 million.
"Everything they've said about Crawford is they like him and intend to keep him," Knicks general manager Isiah Thomas told New York reporters. "Chicago did a nice job with its draft to complement what they already have. So we'll see."
Layups
Manute Bol, a fellow Dinka tribe member, joined Luol Deng at the NBA draft in New York. Deng credits Bol with teaching his older brothers about basketball during a visit to Egypt many years ago. "He was so excited for me," Deng said. ... Paxson said Mario Austin, last year's second-round pick, could be on the summer-league team. ... Chris Duhon, this year's second-round pick, said he has talked to both Jay Williams and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski since the Bulls drafted him and Deng. "Jay told us to go out and compete," Duhon said. "And Coach K told me that I have to be a Cubs fan. I don't know about that." Somewhere, Sox and Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is smiling.
