Vic: Elderly man bashed on the street critical

Eds: Updates on corrected police advice that the man is not dead but in a critical condition.

MELBOURNE, Aug 28 AAP - An elderly man, bashed in what was believed to be an unprovoked
attack by a woman in Melbourne's southeast, is not expected to live.

The 83-year-old was walking home on Alamein Avenue, Ashburton, when he was approached
by a woman around 3.10pm (AEST) on Friday.

It is alleged the woman punched and kicked the man in an unprovoked attack.

A passing motorist saw the assault and made a citizen's arrest, holding the woman until
police arrived.

The man was taken to The Alfred hospital with serious injuries on Friday night.

Victoria Police initially issued a statement saying the man had died but later said
he was in a critical condition and was not expected to live.

Camberwell police are interviewing a 33-year-old Ashburton woman about the bashing.
