Qld: Pump water plan is "common sense" - Howard

The Prime Minister says a federal plan to transfer water from northern NSW to Queensland's
drought-stricken south-east .. is a commonsense approach to the crisis.

Federal Water Resources Minister MALCOLM TURNBULL released a report last week which
concluded a cross-border pipeline would be a cost-effective option.

JOHN HOWARD's told Southern Cross Broadcasting .. the plan passes the commonsense pub
test .. and deserves debate.

The report .. prepared by the Snowy Mountains Energy Corporation for the National Water
Commission .. outlines five options for transporting up to 100 thousand megalitres of
water each year across the border.

Four of the options include damming NSW's Clarence River and piping it to the Logan
River in Queensland .. while the fifth involves damming the Tweed River to pump water
to the Nerang River.

Both the Queensland and NSW state premiers have dismissed the plan.
