Welfare Labor (Canberra)
Opposition Leader KIM BEAZLEY has accused the government of wanting to introduce work
for the pension.
Mr BEAZLEY says Employment Services Minister TONY ABBOTT is determined to extend the
work for the dole principles as part of the government's welfare reforms -- expected to
be released this week.
Mr BEAZLEY says the government is attempting to wean people off welfare through punishments
rather than incentives.
Opposition family and community services spokesman WAYNE SWAN says the Labor party
is calling on the government to invest in training to reduce welfare dependency.
Mr SWAN says unemployed people have responsibility to look for work, but he says the
government has to live up to its end of the bargain.
Western Australian Liberal backbencher BARRY HAASE says he supports an extension of
mutual obligation to some single parents.
He says if single parents are in a position to work for some of their welfare benefits,
they should do so.
And Mr HAASE says the question of whether people receiving disability payments should
also be required to work, should depend on their disability.
