Fed; Warne denies wrongdoing in alleged blackmail bid
MELBOURNE, Feb 19 AAP - Cricket star Shane Warne has spoken out about the alleged attemptto blackmail the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) over an incident involving a teenagerin Queensland`s Gold Coast in January.
According to reports, a man demanded money from the cricket board to keep quiet abouta claim that Warne inappropriately kissed a teenage girl as the Australian team relaxedbefore a one-day international in Brisbane.
In a brief statement from South Africa, where the Australian cricket side is playingin the opening tour match at Potchefstroom, Warne said the matter was disappointing buthe had done no wrong.
Fellow teammate Brett Lee backed Warne yesterday, saying he was with Warne at the timeand nothing untoward took place.
Victorian police confirmed they were investigating an alleged blackmail attempt on the ACB.
Police said a man was arrested at Melbourne Airport last Friday over the matter butno charges have been laid at this stage.
In a statement, Warne said it was sad the people involved had tried to cash in on his fame.
"Obviously, I can't comment and I can't speak about the specifics of the case, butI would like to put on record the fact it's all rubbish and it's disappointing and it'ssad that these people have tried to take advantage of my high profile, who I am, andthe Australian Cricket Board," he said in a statement.
"The whole situation is very disappointing and I hope it's resolved quickly."
The ACB was reluctant to release details yesterday.
