NSW: Carr rules out a move to Canberra, despite popular backing

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR has ruled out a move to Canberra, despite a poll showing
that 61 per cent of Australians thought he would make a good federal Labor leader.

25 per cent of respondents in a Taverner poll, published in today's Sun-Herald, picked
Mr CARR when asked who they'd prefer as federal Labor leader.

Seven per cent backed incumbent SIMON CREAN -- while 40 per cent picked former Labor
leader KIM BEAZLEY and eight per cent preferred foreign affairs spokesman KEVIN RUDD.

The poll has revealed strong support for Mr CARR across the country, with 64 per cent
of Australians saying he'd make a better Prime Minister than Mr CREAN.

But a spokesman for Mr CARR says the premier has no federal ambitions.

The spokesman says Mr CARR is happy as NSW premier.

Two days before the state election, Mr CARR told ABC radio he wouldn't be tempted by
the federal Labor leadership and described the position as the hardest one in the political
system.
