Fed: PM praises water deal, but walkout on health 'petulant' = 3
Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson, who has led the government's negotiations on waterproperty rights, said the deal would safeguard Australia's future.
He said the agreement would end uncertainty for farmers, by restoring investment confidenceto rural areas.
It would also mean better environmental outcomes.
"We're the driest continent on earth and yet we use 30 per cent more water per headthan OECD averages," Mr Anderson said.
"No country has a greater interest in getting water right for the next century andbeyond than this one."
Mr Anderson said there were still issues dealing with the design of water trading rules,a national water ownership register and urban water reform that had to be resolved.
But he said today was his happiest ever in public life.
"I'm absolutely delighted," he said.
