Vic: Three-state police blitz

SYDNEY, Dec 7 AAP - NSW Police have laid 97 drink-driving charges during the firstweek of a three-state pre-Christmas road safety blitz.

Police from NSW, Victoria and South Australia conducted more than 24,000 random breathtests this week - all part of operation RAID (Remove Alcohol Impaired Drivers).

The operation, concentrating on major highways at border crossing points, also ledto nearly 900 speeding and 84 seat belt charges being laid, Senior Sergeant Des Ross said.

"Despite plenty of warnings about Operation RAID ... a further 44 charges were laidfor such offences as a disqualified driver and failing to stop at a stop sign," he said.

The operation coincides with the 20th anniversary of the introduction of random breathtesting in NSW.
